Nail biting and picking can leave nails thin, uneven and sensitive. Many clients visiting The Rainbow Studio in Southampton come in feeling frustrated that their nails never seem to grow properly — but in most cases, recovery is absolutely possible with the right approach.
When nails are repeatedly bitten or picked, the nail plate becomes thinner and the surrounding skin often becomes irritated. This can make nails feel fragile and slow to grow, but the nail matrix underneath the skin is usually still capable of producing healthy new nail.
Recovery usually works best when nails are supported while they grow out. Protective overlays can help reduce breakage and discourage picking while new nail grows through.
In some cases I also use IBX treatment, which works inside the nail plate to help strengthen weak or damaged nails as they grow.
Nails grow slowly, typically around 3–4 mm per month. This means recovery is a gradual process rather than an instant fix. Consistent care and regular maintenance appointments usually give the best results.
