Looking After Gel Nails Between Appointments

Gel nails are designed to be durable and long-lasting, but a few simple habits can make a big difference to how they wear and how healthy your natural nails stay underneath. This is something I regularly talk through with clients visiting The Rainbow Studio in Southampton.

Hydration makes nails stronger

Nails and cuticles do best when they’re kept hydrated. Using cuticle oil regularly helps keep the nail plate flexible and the surrounding skin comfortable, which can support better wear and reduce dryness.

Avoid picking or peeling

If product starts to lift slightly at an edge, it can be tempting to pick it — but peeling gel away often removes layers of the natural nail too. This can leave nails thin and uneven, and can reduce how well future sets last.

If you notice lifting, it’s best to leave it alone and let it be safely removed or repaired at your next appointment.

Protect nails in day-to-day life

  • Wear gloves for cleaning or when using strong products.
  • Avoid using nails as tools (opening cans, scraping labels, etc.).
  • Be mindful of pressure on the tips if nails are longer.

Keep maintenance regular

Most gel services are designed to be maintained every 2–3 weeks, depending on nail growth and lifestyle. Leaving nails much longer can increase the chance of lifting and can put extra stress on the natural nail.
